Star Wars: Darth Vader Vol. 2: Shadows and Secrets Review

Star Wars Darth Vader Vol. 2 Shadows and Secrets

Here’s my review for Star Wars Darth Vader Vol 2 Shadows and Secrets by Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca! Is this story worth continuing to collect? Read on to find out!

The Book Itself

3/5

This is a standard Trade Paperback collection. Cover and spine design are nice enough, although I don’t like the cover nearly as much as the cover of the first volume. Sadly enough, this book doesn’t contain any extras in the back. No cover gallery or character design sketch gallery. So that’s somewhat disappointing.

The Art

4/5

Salvador Larroca continues to do great art work in this book. As I mentioned in the previous review, he gets everything right here. Classic characters from the movies match their established look. Darth Vader looks great, as do all the space ships like Star Destroyers and TIE Fighters and whatnot. Edgar Delgado does a great job with the coloring.

What’s new in this book also looks cool and creative. I love the new droids Triple Zero and BT. While their look is obviously very classic and reminiscent of C-3PO and R2-D2, their design is unique enough to be fun and cool.

The Story

3/5

Kieron Gillen‘s story in Volume 2 is another fun romp with Darth Vader. It never gets old seeing Vader threaten, intimidate, menace, and slaughter all he encounters. And what Gillen really captures perfectly is Vader’s voice and dialogue. His lines in this book and the rest of the series sounds like authentic Darth Vader. Vader is demanding. He is menacing. He doesn’t accept failure. And he gets results, no matter who he has to crush!

This arc is about Vader bringing order to the outer Rim worlds, and bringing some of the local outlaws under the control of the Empire. Helping him along the way is Aphra, the scavenger and weapons/droids expert, and his two new droid sidekicks Triple Zero and BT. These murderous sociopathic droids are both hilarious to read and they make the perfect companions to Darth Vader. They’re probably one the best highlights of this series after Vader himself.

Conclusion

Star Wars Darth Vader Vol 2 Shadows and Secrets

Star Wars Darth Vader Vol 2 Shadows and Secrets is a good continuation to the story began in Volume 1. This book is worth getting to follow the continuing adventures of Darth Vader and Aphra.
